- Tibet Travel Info
Tibet , a land of ancient Buddhist culture, awesome landscapes, artistic monasteries, exotic cities, hidden valleys and centuries-old caravan trails. Tibet offers a totally different experience. Known as the Roof of the World. It is the destination for ultimate thrill-seeker. The Kathmandu is the natural gateway to this amazing land. Once the center of the ancient trade route connecting India and Tibet. fine transport connections exit between Kathmandu and Lhasa, the capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. You can go overland on a scenic highway that retraces the old caravan trail or take a spectacular flight over the Himalaya. The one-hour flight to Lhasa is an adventure in itself. Taking off from Kathmandu, the plane flies alongside the eastern Himalayas as far as Mt. Everest and then turns north with gigantic snow peaks filling up the left-hand side windows. So, the mountains drop away and you are gliding across the barren Tibetan plateau to touch down at Gonggar Airport, 85 km from Lhasa.
However, in May and June there is a wind factor to consider and dust storms are not unusual. These are not pleasant if you're hitching or trekking but usually come in squalls and can be seen coming. Lhasa and Shigatse experience very mild weather between May and November although July and August can be rainy. During the day a light shirt or jumper and lightweight pants will be suitable, but a warm fleece or down jacket is recommended for evenings.
Lhasa, Tsedang, and Shigatse: As the weather and tourist facilities in these places are quite good, you can visit them at anytime to enjoy the breathtaking scenery!
Lhasa---
the border of Nepal/China: This area is not available for tourists from Dec-Jan because of the agricultural land; every August, the rainy season, landslides may can occur.
Mt. Everest area: it is too cold for tourists visiting this area from Oct to April! But the beauty of the roof of the world will move you anytime you visit!
(Mt.Kailishi):
You can enjoy the wonders in this area in May, June, July, Sep, and Oct without the problem of landslides caused by heavy rain & snow.
East Tibet: Don't attempt this area in winter and in July and Aug, as there are terrible landslides in summer and frozen land in winter!
North Tibet: Since it is too high, with the average altitude at 4,500 M, you only can appreciate its beauty in summer!
Travelling in Tibet is an adventure involving high altitude and could be strenuous. While most visitors have only minor effects from the altitude, we advise specially the guests with known heart or lungs or blood diseases to consult their doctor before travelling. Mild headache, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorder can take place in a process of acclimatization. Our advice for better acclimatization, drink 4 liter. Of water minimum a day, do not exhaust yourself so much, breathe deep and take rest more than usual.
Tipping
Tipping was officially forbidden in China but is now common and expected. In Tibet the normal practice is to tip the guide and driver according to their level of service. It is however right to present small gifts such as cassette tapes of western music, cigarette lighters, or dictionaries and other foreign language books of a non political nature as a gesture of appreciation for service rendered by your guide/interpreter and drivers. Instead of candy or balloons, it may be better to give picture postcards, booklets and pen and pencils to children.Best Season to Visit Tibet
The best season for touring in Tibet is from April to early November (various routes have their own golden times). The average temperature ranges from 15-25 degrees Celsius and the skies are fairly clear and blue. From April to the beginning of October is the best time for treks and seeing Mt. Kailash. Although the Tibetan climate is not as harsh as many people imagine, be prepared for sudden drops of temperature at night, particularly in Western Tibet. However, in May and June there is a wind factor to consider and dust storms are not unusual. Architecture is uniform and beautiful. All houses are of a similar style and there are NO western type buildings. Even the newest buildings retain the Bhutanese flavor. Streams are clear and the roads are paved. There is electricity 24/7, the food is good and the people are very friendly.
