Kailash and Namtso Lake
Isolated but serene, natural and unforced, the Namtso Lake in Tibet is a revelation. The bewildering and un-navigable waters (due to religious reasons) of the Lakes in Tibet have allowed this region to keep its spiritual heritage largely intact. Being the second largest saltwater lake in China only after Qinghai Lake, the turquoise blue Namtso Lake is the biggest in Tibet. It is spread quietly across an exceptionally varied topography and attracts more pilgrims than tourists every year.
We commemorate this trip to this beautiful lake, and to Mount Kailash, the epitome of beauty and the divine. We begin down south in Kathmandu and cross the flat plains of the cool and remote Tibetan Plateau, and Zhangmu, Nyalam and Saga. Throughout these little-visited destinations, we discover a world bursting with spiritual colors, rich with ethnic customs that quite dazzles the senses. Up north, we reach Mansarovar and Darchen, the base camp of the mysterious Mt. Kailash which stands majestically imposing, beautiful, and an explorer-stumper. We remain there for two days, exploring the locales around it. We then drive to Paryang, Lhatse and Xigatse where each step creates integrated, scenic vistas. We then visit Namtso Lake and trek around it before leaving for Lhasa.
